Computer Security

Anybody who owns or has owned a PC will likely know what malicious software (often called malware) is. Millions of them all around the world have and are continually being attacked by them. Some examples of these are computer viruses, Trojan horses, and spyware. Because most people really do not know how to protect their computers, here is a basic guide to give you an idea of what you should do to protect your computer. The information on this page should be used as a guide that will help you with your computer protection, not a be-all-end-all.


What is malicious software?
Malware is software that is produced specifically for the purpose of damaging or accessing your computer. Malware, as stated before, can include items such as spyware, computer viruses, and Trojan horses.


How can I protect myself from them?
You will need software known as anti-virus software to protect yourself from some forms of malware, such as worms and Trojans. If you would like to be protected from spyware, you will need to download software known as anti-spyware in order to securely defend yourself from hackers.


Some Suggestions

  • Instead of using Internet Explorer, I highly suggest you should use another browser such as Mozilla Firefox, Opera, or Google Chrome.

  • Update your computer regularly. It can certainly help you protect your computer from any holes your Windows OS, specifically Windows Vista and XP.

  • Use your common sense when you're on the computer, especially if you use software like LimeWire or download torrents. They are very risky, and you should be careful of what you download from it.


Recommended Programs

Some software and software companies I know and trust on a daily basis. Be sure to include SOME of these onto your army of security software, as piling on all of these programs may cause them to conflict.

  • Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware - A program designed to remove various forms of malware from your computer. I rely on this to protect my computer often.

  • Kaspersky Internet Security - A software company whose software is very reliable. All of their anti-virus software is usually rated very highly and have received editor's choice awards from places such as CNet.

  • Spybot Search & Destroy - A trustworthy program that is designed to remove spyware from your computer. They have been noted as a very reliable anti-spyware program.

All in all, be wary of what you do on the computer. It's a magical thing, but there are many who want to kill the fun for you. Be safe of what you do online and don't be stupid. Good luck.
